Description
Medicine – Urology Heller, Johann Florian Urinary calculi: their formation, detection and analysis, with particular reference to the diagnosis and treatment of kidney and bladder diseases. With 12 colour lithographic plates. Vienna, Tendler & Comp, 1860. X, 197 pp. (modern). Half-leather binding with title on spine. First edition, rare. – “Important work” (Garrison/Morton 4291). - Hirsch-H. III, 146. - J. F. Heller (1813–1871), a pupil of Liebig and Wöhler, established a pathological-chemical institute at the General Hospital in Vienna as early as 1844. “Many reactions still used today in clinical urine analysis, notably the detection of protein using nitric acid by stratification in a conical flask, and furthermore the detection of haemoglobin by precipitating earth phosphates with potassium hydroxide, still bear the name of H.', who first applied them” (H.-H.). – Prior to Heller’s research, bladder and kidney stones (urinary calculi) were usually assessed by doctors purely macroscopically (based on shape and colour). Heller applied precise chemical and microscopic methods to this medical problem. He demonstrated how the exact composition of the stones (e.g. uric acid, oxalates or phosphates) could be accurately determined in the laboratory. Heller did not view the occurrence of urinary stones as an isolated surgical problem, but as a consequence of metabolic disorders throughout the body. His book offered doctors, for the first time, a systematic guide to identifying the risk of stone formation at an early stage through the chemical analysis of urine (diagnosis of nephrolithiasis). - Bookplate on the inside cover, slightly foxed.
