First edition, 2nd printing. – Blake p. 261 – Wellcome III, 473 – Waller 5670 – This work by Le Dran, Chief Surgeon at the Hôpital de la Charité, was a milestone in the professionalisation of surgery in the 18th century. Le Dran engaged intensively with the lateral perineal incision introduced by Frère Jacques Beaulieu and further developed by Johannes Rau. He refined the anatomical technique for making the incision on the patient. Through his precise instructions, he helped surgeons to minimise damage to the bladder neck and the sphincter muscle, which drastically reduced the mortality rate – which was extremely high at the time – as well as the risk of lifelong incontinence. - Some foxing and tanning; further details.
