Description
Medicine – Urology Loew, Joseph On Urine as a Diagnostic and Prognostic Indicator from a Physiological and Pathological Perspective. Landshut, Thomann, 1808. 266 pp. (Mod.) Half-leather with red title (Original cover bound in). First edition. – “A prize thesis awarded the degree of Doctor of Medicine and Surgery in 1808 by the Royal Medical Section at the Ludwig-Maximilian University in Landshut”. - “Time and again one observes the pedantic care and conciseness with which, in keeping with the scientific standards of the time, researchers previously approached the analysis of urine and described the ‘results’ in numerous dissertations and other writings. Incidentally, one work that clearly stood out from these was Loew’s textbook from 1808, the original of which is held in the Bavarian State Library. With his book, Loew undertook... to collect and record all the properties and signs of urine known at the time into a ‘uroscopy’. This work, based on semiotics, attributes a significance to the ‘fluid’ which substantially shaped the prevailing diagnostic theory of the 18th and 19th centuries” (Zglinicki, Uroscopy in the Fine Arts, p. 11). – Sun-faded or with brown spots; front cover of the original edition includes a watermark; bookplate on the reverse of the original edition.
