Marcet, Alexander
An Attempt at a Chemical History and Medical Treatment of Stone Diseases. Translated from the English by Philipp Heineken. With 10 copperplate engravings (3 printed in sepia). Bremen, Heyse, 1818. Large 8°. XVI, 164 pp., 9 leaves. Contemporary interim paperback binding with a red label (slightly rubbed and bumped, with slight foxing).
First German edition with the copperplate engravings from the original English edition of 1817. – Hirsch-H. IV, 70. – Cf. Waller 6240 (English ed.). – A valuable contribution to clinical chemistry. ‘During my lectures on chemistry at the Guy’s Hospital, when the subject of urinary stones was mentioned, I realised that this topic was entirely new to the majority of my audience, and how eagerly they absorbed what I said about it in a few lectures’ (Preface). - In 1819, Marcet returned to Geneva, where he became Professor of Medical Chemistry. Marcet was one of the first to consistently link the findings of chemistry with medical practice at the patient’s bedside, with the aim not only of surgically removing bladder and kidney stones, but also of understanding them fundamentally. - A wide-margined, uncut copy on heavy handmade paper (the uncut margins are partly slightly dusty).
