Description
Medicine – Urology Simon, Gustav A historical account of the surgical closure of the vagina by uniting the vaginal walls (colpokleisis) to achieve urinary continence in cases of incurable urinary fistulae in women, together with remarks on the current state of surgery for vesicovaginal fistulae in Germany. To Mr Nathan Bozeman. With 4 woodcuts. Berlin, G. Reimer, 1868. 16 pp. Contemporary half-leather binding with handwritten title on the cover (slightly foxed). A rare offprint from Göschen’s *Deutsche Klinik* 1868, Nos. 45/46. - In this letter to his colleague Bozeman in New York, Simon rejects the latter’s ‘claims of priority regarding the invention of the vaginal closure by uniting the vaginal walls’. - Simon was one of the most brilliant surgeons of the second half of the 19th century. He refined the new, successful method for operating on vesicovaginal fistulas, which he had learnt from Jobert de Lamballe in Paris in 1851. In 1869, following preparatory experiments on animals, he became the first to successfully perform a nephrectomy on a woman suffering from a post-operative renal fistula. In 1870, he performed a nephrectomy for hydronephrosis and, in 1871, one for a stone-filled kidney. - Some foxing. This lot is subject to standard tax.
