V, 861 – Killian² 69 (detailed) - A treatise awarded a prize by the Göttingen Society of Sciences by the famous Austrian Imperial Court Surgeon Joseph Edler von Wattmann (1789–1866), who taught surgery in Ljubljana and Innsbruck at the start of his career, was appointed to Vienna in 1824, where he ‘exercised a great attraction on his audience through his brilliant lectures’ (Hirsch/H.). – Wattmann introduced the French method of lithotripsy at the Vienna Clinic. He summarised his experiences in this treatise “and, in a critical examination of the findings of Civiale, Leroy and Heurteloup, clearly defined—in a manner that remains valid to this day—the contraindications of the new method as well as the indications for cystotomy” (E. Lesky). – Inside cover and title page stamped; otherwise a good, clean copy. – Accompanied by: Wattmann, J.v., ‘On Civiale’s Lithotripsy. A Letter to C. F. v. Graefe’. pp. 351–353, in *Journal der Chirurgie*, edited by C. F. v. Gräfe and Ph. v. Walther. Vol. 12, No. 3. Berlin, G. Reimer, 1829. (Mod.) Paperback, (original illustrated brochure bound in). – First edition. In 1827, Wattmann ‘introduced the French method of lithotripsy at the Vienna Clinic, despite opposition from his teacher Kern’. The issue contains, amongst other things, several papers by Eduard von Graefe, including a ‘Contribution to the artificial formation of the pupil’. – Even tanning, a good copy.
