Description
Medicine – Urology Willich, Jodocus Urinarum Probationes. By Hieronymus Reusnerus Leorinus, Doctor of Medicine, in which the principles of sound urology are traced back to the sources of sound philosophy: and many errors of physicians are exposed. Accompanied by various illustrations of bladders: and the true colours of urine. With numerous woodcuts. Basel, Sebastian Henricpetri, 1582. 12 leaves, 341 pages, 1 leaf. Contemporary calfskin with gold-stamped title and rich decorative borders (slightly scuffed). First edition. – VD16, W 3257 – Durling 4744 – Waller 10310 – Wellcome 6745. - One of the earliest, and certainly the most comprehensive, treatises on the subject of urine. Jodocus Willich, who practised in Frankfurt/Oder, was a polymath; Hieronymus Reusner corrected the work’s medical errors. Attempts to depict the colours of urine true to life developed at an early stage. “Just as there were numerous diseases, so too were there many nuances to be distinguished in the colour of urine. Thus, in this treatise we find a total of 21 urine colours described, ranging from crystal-clear to black. Furthermore, attention had to be paid to the viscosity of the urine, as well as to the various admixtures. It was not until the beginning of the modern era that the practice of tasting urine became common” (Konert/Dietrich, Illustrated History of Urology, p. 41 ff.). The woodcut illustrations – many of which are repeated – depict vessels that are important for the urologist’s practice. The final leaf bears a fine woodcut printer’s mark. – The first and last leaves have some water-stains and are slightly frayed at the lower outer margins; otherwise, the volume is in good condition.
