Polak 1049. – This work is the prize-winning treatise by Pierre Bouguer on the method for determining magnetic declination (compass deviation) at sea. It was published in 1731 by Claude Jombert in Paris and was later included in the official anthology *Recueil des pièces qui ont remporté le prix de l’Académie Royale des Sciences*. Bouguer, then Professor of Hydrography in Le Havre, won his third consecutive Grand Prix from the Académie Royale des Sciences with this work – following the prizes awarded in 1727 for his treatise on the rigging of ships and in 1729 for his method of measuring the altitude of celestial bodies at sea. In recognition of his achievements, he was elected a member of the Académie Royale des Sciences in the same year, 1731
