Description
Zoology Henry, Aimé Two plates. Monkeys. From: *Natural History Atlas*. Circa 1830. Hand-coloured lithographs on vellum. Each approx. 36 x 43 cm (62 x 48.5 cm). With the typographical description in Latin and German, as well as the systematic classification. Each sheet is age-browned, partially slightly stained, bumped at the edges, with occasional traces of former mounting and a few creases and tears. Overall in good condition. Magnificent, large-format prints with a nuanced, chalky effect. Edited by Georg August Goldfuß. Published by Arnz & Comp., Düsseldorf, 1824–1842. - Cf. Nissen, Zoologische Buchillustration, no. 1617. - These two finely executed lithographs after Aimé Henry combine precise scientific observation with a painterly approach that was remarkably sophisticated for its time, with particular attention paid to fur texture and the modelling of the body. Depicted are a colobus monkey (Colobus polykomos) and a black-crested langur (Pygathrix nemaeus), whose names and systematic classification still follow the early taxonomy of Illiger (‘Quadrumana’). The plates thus vividly document the state of scientific knowledge prior to the establishment of modern zoological classification systems. Zoology. – Two plates. From: Natural History Atlas.
