Hansen B 786 – Not listed in Nissen – Schlüpmann/Kronshage/Geiger: Bibliography on the Herpetofauna of North Rhine-Westphalia, 181. - First edition of the standard popular science work on the fauna of Westphalia, edited by the Münster zoologist and theologian Hermann Landois (1835–1905), Professor of Zoology at the Academy in Münster, founder of the city’s Zoological Garden (1875) and of the Westphalian Provincial Museum of Natural History (1892). Alongside Landois, Emil Rade, a Münster-based financial adviser, and – particularly for the third volume – the herpetologist Fritz Westhoff (1857–1896) played a key role in its compilation. This three-volume work classifies the vertebrate fauna of Westphalia according to the classical major zoological groups: Volume I deals with native wild and domestic mammals (including bats, the hippopotamuses in the River Weser, East Frisian cattle, and the folk names for animals in the local dialect), Volume II covers the birdlife of Westphalia, whilst Volume III deals with reptiles, amphibians and fish. From a scholarly perspective, the third volume is largely regarded as the work of Westhoff, who was able to draw on his own preliminary herpetofaunal research from 1890–91. The work was the first to systematically combine scientific rigour with a ‘captivating’ style of presentation accessible to the educated layman, and brought Landois to prominence far beyond specialist circles. It remains to this day a fundamental faunistic source for Westphalia and is regularly cited in regional zoological and herpetological literature, for example in bibliographies on the herpetofauna of North Rhine-Westphalia
Zoology. – First edition of the popular-scientific standard work on the fauna of Westphalia, edited by the Münster zoologist and theologian Hermann Landois (1835–1905), professor of zoology at the Academy of Münster, founder of the city’s zoological garden (1875) as well as of the Westphalian Provincial Museum of Natural History (1892). Alongside Landois, the work was prepared chiefly by the Münster councillor Emil Rade and – particularly for the third volume – the herpetologist Fritz Westhoff (1857–1896). This three-volume work classifies the vertebrate fauna of Westphalia according to the classic major zoological groups: Volume I covers native wild and domestic mammals (including bats, the hippopotamuses in the River Weser, East Frisian cattle, as well as local dialect names for animals), Volume II the bird life of Westphalia, and Volume III, finally, reptiles, amphibians and fish. The third volume is regarded by experts as having been largely shaped by Westhoff, who was able to draw on his own preliminary herpetofaunistic studies from 1890–91. The work was the first to combine systematic scientific rigour with a presentation that was ‘captivating’ and accessible to the educated layperson, making Landois well known far beyond specialist circles. It remains to this day a fundamental faunistic source for Westphalia and continues to be regularly cited in regional zoological and herpetological specialist literature, for instance in bibliographies of the herpetofauna of North Rhine-Westphalia.
