The Conchylia in the Cabinet of His Highness the Hereditary Prince (Friedrich Karl) of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt. With 12 hand-coloured copperplate engravings and 1 text plate. Rudolstadt, published at the author’s expense by Bergmann’s Press, 1786. 8°. LXXII, 252 pp., 2 leaves. Contemporary leather binding with calico endpapers and red edging on the reverse (joints rubbed and brittle).
First edition. – Nissen, ZBI 2148. BMC (Natural History), p. 953. – The plates are based on drawings by the author’s brother (J. E. L. Kämmerer). An extremely rare supplement containing 4 plates was also published, but is not included here. Kämmerer was in charge of the princely natural history cabinet founded in 1757, which was only systematised under his leadership and specialised in conchology and palaeontology. This work presents the systematics of the conch collection, which is essentially based on the Martinian system but has been supplemented and improved in many places. Kämmerer’s treatise was translated into several languages (ADB). – Title page bearing the ex-libris stamp of Richard I. Johnson. - Slightly browned due to the paper. - Very rare.
