Description
Zoology – Herpetology Fatio, Victor Fauna of the Vertebrates of Switzerland. Volume III: Natural History of Reptiles and Amphibians. With 5 (2 colour) lithographs and a table. Geneva and Basel, H. Georg, Bookseller and Publisher (Paris, J.-B. Baillière et fils), 1872. Large 8vo. VI, 603 pp. Contemporary half-leather. Parent, Georges H.: Bibliography of the French Herpetofauna, 1149. - Third volume of the monumental five- or six-volume work *Faune des Vertébrés de la Suisse* by the Geneva zoologists Victor Fatio de Beaumont (1838–1906), the compilation of which spanned over 40 years (Vol. I Mammals 1869, Vol. II/III Reptiles and Amphibians 1872, Vol. IV Fishes 1882/1890, Vol. V/VI Birds 1899/1904). Fatio, son of the Genevan ornithologist Gustave Fatio, studied zoology in Zurich under Oswald Heer, in Berlin and Leipzig, and in Paris under Claude Bernard and Henri Milne-Edwards; he is regarded as one of the most important Swiss vertebrate researchers of the 19th century. This volume provides the first comprehensive treatment of the natural history of the reptiles and amphibians of Switzerland: the systematics, distribution, lifestyle and habitats of native lizards, snakes, tortoises, as well as frogs, toads and newts, supplemented by numerous records of localities, including those from areas of France close to the border. For decades, the work remained the standard reference work on Swiss herpetofauna and is still cited today in specialist herpetological literature, including early works on the batrachology of the canton of Neuchâtel and in modern Red Lists and bibliographies of Swiss amphibians and reptiles. - A few leaves with marginal damage to the right-hand edge. - The supplement is bound in. - Slightly stained. Still a good copy.
