Description
Zoology – Herpetology Grohmann, Francesco S. New description of the Sicilian chameleon, discovered and described by Francesco S. Grohmann. With one lithographed plate. Palermo, 1832. 4°. 12 pp., 3 leaves. Contemporary paperback with a red label (slightly rubbed). Betta, Fauna d’Italia, 103. – A rare Sicilian natural history pamphlet on the supposed discovery of a chameleon native to Sicily. In it, Grohmann describes the so-called ‘Camaleonte siculo’ (Cameleo siculus), which was later listed as a synonym of the European chameleon, Chamaeleo chamaeleon (Linnaeus, 1758). However, the attribution of a distinct Sicilian species proved untenable: contemporary naturalists interpreted the specimens observed near Palermo and Catania as animals introduced from North Africa. A discarded specimen from the Royal School of Pharmacy. Minimally stained, a fine copy. Zoology. – Herpetology. – With one lithographic plate. Palermo, 1832.
