Muskhelishvili, T.
Atlas of the Amphibians and Reptiles of Georgia. With 30 colour lithographic plates. Tbilisi, WWF / ‘Amiran’ Publishers, 1994. 48 pp. Art print with gold-embossed title (battered, binding on the back cover slightly wavy in places).
First edition of this rare, colour-illustrated survey of Georgian herpetofauna – an extremely rare publication, published entirely in Georgian. The atlas presents the amphibian and reptile species of Georgia through 30 finely executed colour lithographic plates, drawn by the renowned zoological illustrator Nikolai N. Kondakov. His illustrations depict frogs, toads, turtles (both land and aquatic), salamanders/amphibians, lizards and snakes. Jointly published by the World Wildlife Fund and the Tbilisi-based publishing house ‘Amiran’ in the immediate post-Soviet era, the work represents a significant regional record of the herpetological diversity of the Caucasus – produced at a time when scientific publishing in Georgia was severely restricted by the economic upheavals following independence. This circumstance probably also explains the volume’s extraordinary rarity today.
