Linck, H. E
The Snakes of Germany. Stuttgart: J. B. Müller, 1855. IV, 164 pp., 1 leaf. Half leather with a red spine label.
Engelmann, Bibliotheca zoologica, 1086. – A rare 19th-century herpetological treatise on the snakes found in Germany. The volume deals with the native snake fauna against the backdrop of the scientific taxonomy of the time and combines species descriptions with observations on characteristics, habits and distribution. – Slightly yellowed and minimally stained. - Includes: Lachmann, Hermann: The Reptiles and Amphibians of Germany in Words and Pictures. A systematic and biological study of the reptiles and amphibians found in Germany to date. Berlin, published by Paul Hüttig, 1890. XII, 229 pp., 1 p., 1 folio, half leather with coloured paper. - The work documents the state of scientific research into native reptiles and amphibians at the time and thus, in addition to its practical value as an identification guide, is of particular significance in the history of science and collecting. As a standalone work focusing on Germany, it exemplifies the growing interest in natural history and the native fauna towards the end of the 19th century. The original edition is illustrated with over 50 historical plates.
Zoology. – Entomology. – With 43 photolithographic plates, 38 of which are coloured. – First edition. – Rare first publication of an exceptionally ambitious yet unfinished entomological illustrated work. Heinrich Buchecker (1829–1894), a museum curator from Strasbourg, devoted the only regularly published part of his large-scale *Systema entomologiae* to European dragonflies, which he classified under the then customary designation ‘Odonata (Fabric.) europ.’ Buchecker’s vision was extraordinary: he planned a comprehensive system of insect classes, genera and species, illustrated with several thousand plates based on his own observations of nature. Contemporary bibliographies even announced a complete work projected to comprise 45 volumes; in fact, the section on dragonflies remained the principal and only fully elaborated part of the undertaking. - A good copy. Very rare.
