One of the rarest German books on dogs, featuring 43 illustrations of dogs on 32 splendid hand-coloured plates. In the text, each dog is described in terms of its appearance, and in some cases the specific character traits of the breed are mentioned. The work includes breeds that are still commonly kept as well as those that are very rare or even extinct. The work is regarded as one of the most beautiful publications on cynology from the first half of the 19th century. The endpapers and the text are partly foxed; a few pages have small water stains; the title page (the middle section with a cut-out) is mounted in two parts on paper; plate 42: the dog’s name with a mounted label (probably by the publisher); the plates are partly showing some finger marks (the motifs are unaffected); there are sporadic small brown spots; overall in good condition; the plates retain their vivid colours.
