Bellier et Cie – one of the city’s leading lithographic firms, which emerged from the ‘Imprimerie Nouvelle’ in the 1870s. The volume was intended as the first instalment of a multi-volume work. The title and plates bear the designation ‘Ier volume’, and the text concludes with ‘fin du premier volume’. No further volumes were published. A foreword is followed by a historical overview (‘Aperçu historique’) and an introduction containing general ornithological observations. The main section deals with passerines, the first group being the seed-eaters. It begins with the siskin (Fringilla spinus) and ends with the ortolan bunting. Two species of parrot are also included. An alphabetical index concludes the volume. The work is aimed at enthusiasts of avian keeping. The 50 framed plates depict around 84 species, mostly two per sheet, each with the species name printed alongside. Each plate bears the inscription ‘Ier volume’, the plate number, the column title and the publisher’s address ‘A. Bellier et Cie, Imprimeurs-Éditeurs, Bordeaux’; the image area also bears the inscription ‘chromo lith’. Particularly impressive is the original colour illustrated cover. – A fine copy.
