Zoology – Ornithology
Reichenow, Anton
Bird illustrations from distant lands. Illustrations and descriptions of parrots. With 33 chromolithographic and colour-retouched plates based on watercolours by G. Mützel. Kassel, Th. Fischer, 1878–1883. Folio. Contemporary half-leather binding with a gilt title label (slightly stained and rubbed).
Sitwell 133 – Nissen ZBI 3350 – The decorative plates each depict several birds in their natural habitats. An important ornithological illustrated work by the Berlin zoologist Anton Reichenow (1847–1941), dedicated to the parrots of non-European fauna. The artistically executed, vividly coloured chromolithographs, based on drawings by the animal painter Gustav Mützel, combine scientific precision with great decorative appeal and rank among the finest ornithological illustrations of the late 19th century. Reichenow, who later became director of the ornithological department at the Berlin Zoological Museum, was one of the leading German ornithologists of his time. – A work on parrots that is outstanding both scientifically and graphically, prized for its large-format, vibrant depictions of exotic bird species. - Title stamped, slightly browned and dusty, with some foxing or staining in places; some bird names in pencil.
