Zoology – Ornithology Schinz, Heinrich Rudolf Natural History and Illustrations of Birds (or) Bird Genera. Compiled in accordance with the latest classification systems. Zurich, Brodtmann, 1830. XXXVI, 445 pp., XIII. Title page, plates 4°. Marbled. Contemporary half-leather binding with gold-stamped title and some wear. (rubbed and scuffed, joints torn, some minor losses; plates volume rebound). One of the most significant historical works on the systematics of birds in the German-speaking world. – Nissen, IVB 825. - The work provides a comprehensive overview of the bird genera known at the time from around the world. Schinz classified them according to the latest biological systems of his day (heavily influenced by Georges Cuvier, whose standard work *The Animal Kingdom* he also translated into German). Each lithograph features three to four illustrations, including vultures, falcons, owls, magpies, birds of paradise, featherbills, ornamental birds, woodpeckers, siskins, parrots, brush-tailed birds, hummingbirds, kingfishers, peacocks, pheasants, storks, pelicans, gulls and many more. Each illustration is accompanied by German, Latin and French names. – Some pages show signs of mould. Zoology. – Ornithology. – One of the most significant historical works on the systematics of birds in the German-speaking world. With 144 lithographic plates, each containing 3–4 illustrations. – Contemporary half-leather binding (rubbed and scuffed, spines torn, some with small missing pieces, the spine where the plates are bound re-bound). – Partially stained.
