Nordwestbahn 1868–1872. Album containing 29 albumen photographs and an original watercolour. Vienna, Oscar Kramer, c. 1870. 30 leaves. Photographs 18.5 x 24 cm. In a transverse folio album. Original red morocco leather with a border of gilt brass fittings, four raised brass vignettes and four corner fittings, each crowned with a small piece of malachite, as well as a central vignette featuring the Austrian coat of arms and a brass clasp. With gold edging on the reverse (worn and chipped).
A luxurious album containing a photographic record of the early days of the Austrian North-Western Railway. - The licence to construct an ‘Austrian North-Western Railway’ was granted in 1868, and to this end the Austrian North-Western Railway Company (ÖNWB) was founded in 1870 as an imperial and royal privileged public limited company. The plan was for a railway line from Vienna via Znaim, Iglau, Deutschbrod, Kolin and on to Jungbunzlau. The plans and initiative for the construction of the North-Western Railway originated with the engineer Wilhelm Hellwag (1827–1882), who had previously worked on the Brenner Railway. In 1872, train services began at Vienna’s Nordwestbahnhof; the station building was constructed by Theodor Rauter according to plans by Wilhelm Bäumer. This album was most likely presented to Wilhelm Bäumer or Wilhelm Hellwag at the station’s grand opening. The photographs document the construction of the railway line as well as the towns selected as stations along the route. – Edges slightly browned and the cardboard has foxing. The watercolour has foxing; the photographs are partly slightly stained. Overall, a magnificently preserved album in very good condition, containing well-preserved 19th-century photographs.
