Laporta, Juan Giralt
Botámenes para Farmacias. Barcelona and Madrid, Juan Giralt Laporta, undated, c. 1900–1910. Trade catalogue. Double-page, photographically illustrated title page featuring views of the glassworks in Barcelona, 1 sheet of letterpress text, 45 chromolithographed plates depicting glass and porcelain bottles (“Botámenes”/Albarelli) richly decorated in gold and colour on white-coated paper, each within a gold border. All plates signed ‘A. Sauri Sirés-Dibujó’ in the lower right-hand corner. Quarto (27.5 x 18.5 cm). Original illustrated stiff-back paperback with a linen spine. (Cover stained, edges rubbed. Some plates have handwritten price markings in the lower white margin.)
The catalogue originates from the prominent Juan Giralt Laporta glass and porcelain factory, which emerged in 1885 from the older firm Modesto Casademunt in Barcelona, a long-established trading and wholesale house for glass and porcelain goods for pharmacies and laboratories. As early as 1890, Giralt Laporta operated workshops and showrooms in Madrid alongside its Barcelona headquarters (Fuencarral 55, Conde de Peñalver 20/Gran Vía and Caballero de Gracia 10) and developed into one of Spain’s leading suppliers of decorated pharmacy vessels. A company catalogue is also listed in the ILAB’s directory of antiquarian trade catalogues as “Catálogo de los H. de Juan Giralt Laporta, fábrica de cristal soplado y graduado, y de aparatos para farmacias y laboratorios, and workshops for the decoration of bottles and the labelling of vials with fired enamels’, with reference to the company’s registered trade mark. Around 1917, under José María Giralt, acting on his father’s behalf, the company was restructured as “Fábricas reunidas para envases y aparatos de laboratorios químicos e industriales Juan Giralt Laporta”, with a production facility also in Valdemorillo near Madrid. The draughtsman Antoni Saurí Sirés (Barcelona 1871–1942), who signed all 45 plates, was one of the most versatile Catalan graphic designers and illustrators of his generation. Trained at the Escola Industrial and the Escola Llotja in Barcelona, he created not only book and cover designs, diplomas and parchment documents (including a document signed by King Alfonso XIII in 1904), he also created numerous commercial labels, logos and posters. He was a founding member of the Foment de les Arts Decoratives (FAD) as well as a member of the Institut Català de les Arts del Llibre, and was highly regarded as a typographer and epigraphist. His contribution to this commercial catalogue underscores the high artistic standards that Catalan manufacturers set for their sales documentation around 1900.
