Description
Migone & C., Angelo. Catalogue of the award-winning perfumery and toiletries workshop. Milan, Angelo Migone, 1908. 78 pp., 1 additional order form sheet. Featuring numerous full-page illustrations depicting hundreds of toiletries (perfumes and soaps, hand mirrors, combs and brushes), as well as 8 chromolithographic plates showing magnificently decorated perfume bottles and soap packaging. The final section bears the subheading ‘articoli di chincaglieria’, printed on bluish paper. 4° publisher’s binding, half-leather; front cover with richly decorated, embossed design coloured in gold, white and blue. (Edges slightly rubbed.)
The Milan-based firm Angelo Migone & C. is one of Italy’s most long-established perfumery and soap houses and was founded as early as 1778 by Angelo Migone – originally as a barber’s and cosmetics shop in Via Torino, later opening a sales outlet on Via Orefici, right next to Milan Cathedral. From the mid-19th century, a large factory for soaps and perfumes was built opposite Porta Venezia along what is now Corso Buenos Aires, and began operations in 1882. The company produced under brands such as Margherita, Amor, Excelsior, Bacio d’Amore and Falstaff, and exported its products as far as the Mediterranean region. Shortly after the publication of this catalogue, the firm received the highest honour at the 1906 International Exhibition in Milan and, in 1909, the Gold Medal for industrial merit – a testament to its reputation and quality, which are also reflected in the lavish design of this sales catalogue with its eight chromolithographs. The section entitled ‘articoli di chincaglieria’ (haberdashery) at the end shows that Migone had expanded its range beyond mere perfumery and soap products to include complementary toiletries such as mirrors, combs and brushes – an indication of the company’s diversification in the years leading up to the First World War. A fine copy of this magnificently illustrated company catalogue.

A fine copy of this splendidly illustrated trade catalogue.
