Philately Lufthansa. Collection of 56 first flight covers. With accompanying letter. Various places of issue, no postmark, 1978. Each approx. 16.5 x 9.5 cm. Two of each inserted into 28 double-pocket transparent sleeves with perforations, these housed in the original dark blue Lufthansa slip-in album with the company logo on the front cover and a mounted title label on the back. A unique collection comprising an original album of 56 Lufthansa First Flight Covers from 1978. – First Flight Covers were issued to mark the opening of new routes and thus also document the expansion of air traffic in all directions. The covers, consisting of a colour-illustrated envelope and an inserted greeting card, were always carried on the first aircraft on the new route (outbound or return flight); they feature special stamps and 1–2 special postmarks each, and usually also bear the local arrival postmark as proof that they were ‘genuinely’ posted. Amongst others, the inaugural flights from Cairo to Frankfurt, Bogotá to Caracas, Frankfurt to Athens to Jeddah and Anchorage to Osaka are documented. - As the enclosed cover letter indicates, this particular item was a gift from Karl H. Koepcke, then Director of Public Relations at Lufthansa, to the editor of a US aviation magazine. - A unique philatelic and aviation-historical document, here in excellent condition.
