Description
Tobacco Album containing a collection of 67 emblems from tobacco companies. Mid-19th century. 67 leaves. Large 8°. Half leather (heavily scuffed and bumped). An extensive, rare collection of emblems and advertising prints from European tobacco firms, chiefly from the tobacco processing company Hugo Brothers, originally founded in Lahr in 1781 and already established in Basel by the 17th century. Around 1850, the Hugo Brothers’ tobacco factory moved into the Gallizian Mill in Basel’s St Alban Valley. The historic mill was specially converted into an industrial tobacco-pounding facility for this purpose. - The illustrations are partly mounted onto the sheets and partly printed directly onto the sheet. - Contains advertising leaflets (mostly) from the Hugo Brothers in Basel, as well as advertisements from Herman Oldenkott in Amsterdam, Becker & Zoon & Everts, Thorbecke & Comp. in Amsterdam, and others. - The plates mostly depict traditional tobacco motifs – such as gentlemen smoking, on horseback, out hunting, farmers in the fields, coats of arms, portraits, tobacco leaves or exotic scenes alluding to the overseas origin of the raw tobacco (such as Havana or Oriental tobacco). - The book block is coming apart; some pages are loose, partly stained or showing some foxing.
