Hungermüller, Joseph
Design for a theatre set. c. 1810. Watercolour and black pen on heavy vellum. 40.2 x 53 cm. Signed and dated. Mounted in places.
Joseph Hungermüller, a Bavarian theatre painter, has designed an imposing theatre backdrop, richly adorned with architectural elements and a testament to his extraordinary imagination. The view opens out onto a space with a circular, fanning-out layout, supported by Doric columns and coffered arcade arches. Sculptural figures and figural friezes, floral garlands and sphinxes alternate impressively with the Doric columns, outlined in blue and adorned with symbol-laden decorative bands. Hungermüller transports the viewer into a world of fantasy and exuberant opulence, a masterful display of formal diversity. - Isolated, slight creases along the edges, particularly at the top, and, in places, slight brown stains; a small tear at the bottom left and another in the centre, caused by mounting; a small tear along the edge at the bottom centre; slightly detached on the reverse; overall in good condition. The colours are fresh.
