Description
A Large Japanese Imari vase, decorated with 'Shiba Onko and the Broken Water Jar', Meiji, 19th/20th century.
Japanese porcelain, Imari.
Decorated with the famous story of Shiba Onko (the Japanese name for the Chinese historian Sima Guang). It depicts a well-known anecdote from his childhood in which he saves the life of a friend. According to legend, a group of children were playing around a gigantic, precious water jug. One of the children climbed onto the rim, lost his balance, and fell into the deep jar full of water. While most of the children ran away in panic, young Shiba Onko remained calm. He grabbed a large stone and used it to smash a hole in the bottom of the jar. The water immediately drained away, saving his friend from drowning.
