Description
Thomas Frank Heaphy (1813-1873) 'Proscribe Christmas', an exceptional painting, oil on canvas (1868). Oil on canvas. Monogrammed and dated lower left. (153 x 193 cm) In the 17th century, the Puritans banned (proscribed) the celebration of Christmas in both England and parts of the American colonies (such as Massachusetts). This ban stemmed from the belief that Christmas was not biblical, but had pagan or "papist" (Catholic) origins. Puritans based their faith strictly on the Bible. They saw no scriptural justification for celebrating December 25th as the birthday of Jesus. The traditional celebration, with lavish meals, was seen as immoral. (160 x 120 x 0 cm) Condition report: A condition report not being available doesn't mean the item is flawless. If you'd like one, email us with the relevant lot number(s). Please also look closely at the photos, as they usually reveal any damage or missing parts. Feel free to reach out with questions or if you'd like additional images.
