Description
The Témoignage Group and Marcel AVRIL (1877–1944)
An extremely rare catalogue of the Témoignage Group’s exhibition at Marcel Michaud’s Folklore Gallery in December 1940
The colour cover, likely stencilled by René Maria Burlet, features the motif from Jean Def’s drawing (1564), chosen for its symbolic significance
The catalogue, spanning some thirty pages, features fourteen artists: Marcel Avril, Jean Bertholle, Lucien Beyer, René-Maria Burlet, Lucien Chardon, Albert Gleizes, Jean Le Moal, Camille Niogret, Robert Pernin, Joseph Silvant, Louis Thomas, Étienne Martin, Georges Salendre and François Stahly, each illustrated by a black-and-white reproduction of a work; a photomontage on the title page shows a collage of portraits of all the artists, with Avril depicted as a child
The exhibition features nine works by Marcel Avril: 1. God Alone and One; 2. Playing Cards during the War; 3. Six Tiny Drawings; 4. Recherche; 5. The Poet; 6. Spring; 7. Nativity; 8. Sounds and Colours (small drawing inspired by Porte’s music: ‘John, you are dead’); 9. Two paintings: Forms and Colours
