A few months after winning the Formula 1 World Championship with Juan Manuel Fangio at the wheel of the 250F, the Modena-based manufacturer officially withdrew from motor racing in order to devote its expertise to the production of Grand Tourer cars. The first Maserati to be mass-produced, the 3500 GT is now regarded as the model that ushered in the manufacturer’s modern era. Its commercial success enabled the Modena-based company to regain long-term financial stability and establish itself on international markets, particularly in the United States. Designed to rival the Ferrari 250 GT, the 3500 GT combined elegance, performance and refinement. Its superb bodywork is the work of Carrozzeria Touring in Milan, which applied its famous Superleggera technique, combining a tubular frame with aluminium panels. Touring created a silhouette of remarkable purity, with perfectly balanced proportions, characterised by a long bonnet, a cabin subtly set back and a roofline of great fluidity. The ribbed air intake on the bonnet, the side vents on the front wings and the extensive use of glass, highlighted by a large panoramic windscreen and an elegant, curved rear window, complete a design that ranks among the finest creations of Carrozzeria Touring and Maserati. Beneath this graceful bodywork lies a 3,485 cm³ inline six-cylinder engine, developed by Giulio Alfieri based on the Maserati 350 S racing engine. Fitted with two overhead camshafts and dual ignition, it produces 220 ch thanks to its Weber carburettors and enables the 3500 GT to reach nearly 230 km/h. Smooth, powerful and exceptionally reliable, this engine played a major part in the model’s reputation. The interior perfectly reflects the philosophy of this great Italian grand tourer, combining a sporty look with a high level of comfort. Its 2+2 layout offers surprising spaciousness, its circular dials angled towards the driver, its traditional three-spoke steering wheel bearing the Trident emblem, and the quality of its materials and finish make long journeys a pleasure in conditions worthy of the finest Grand Tourer cars of its era. The Maserati 3500 GT was a resounding commercial success, with 2,228 units produced between 1957 and 1964. It marked the beginning of a line of Grand Tourer cars that would continue with the Sebring and Mistral, followed by the Mexico, Ghibli, Indy, Bora and Khamsin, all models that would help forge the reputation of the Modena-based manufacturer. Indeed, even today, the 3500 GT remains one of the most elegant and iconic Italian Grand Tourisme cars.
