HOTCHKISS 680 CABOURG – SALOON 1937
This Hotchkiss 680 Cabourg is in a remarkable state of preservation for a pre-war car.
Its registration number ‘1943 AR 13’ suggests that it has spent most of its life in the Bouches-du-Rhône region, presumably kept away from damp conditions.
As a result, its structural condition is outstanding. The doors show no play and close perfectly without needing to be lifted, testifying to the excellent preservation of the wooden frame.
Interior and upholstery
The interior, fitted with the original beige fabric, is in a fine state of preservation. Only the seat cushion of the front right-hand seat is slightly damaged. The headlining and door trims show no significant wear and tear.
The original upholstery, made from high-quality fabric, is well worth preserving.
The interior fittings are complete and in excellent condition. The door handles, knobs, pull-tabs and various controls are all present. The chrome fittings are perfectly preserved.
Only a slight discolouration of the Rhodoïd on the steering wheel is worth noting.
Bodywork and exterior components
The bodywork is complete and in an excellent state of preservation.
No apparent signs of corrosion or panel repairs are visible on the wings or door sills.
The bumpers are in very good condition and have retained their original chrome finish, although it is slightly tarnished.
The headlights, tail lights, badges and door handles are all present and perfectly preserved.
This Cabourg has not undergone any major modifications or modernisations. Only ‘Jockey’-type side indicators were added after the war to comply with changing regulations. Their installation blends harmoniously with the vehicle’s lines.
Painted dark blue, this car appears to have been repainted just once, most likely in its original colour. The current paintwork is in a condition that would allow it to be preserved following careful polishing.
Historical feature
The attentive observer will notice the faint mark left by a vertical bar that was once fixed to the centre of the grille.
This is likely the mark left by an accessory offered by Hotchkiss from 1938 onwards, designed to modernise the appearance of the front end of the 1937 models.
It is likely that the collector, the previous owner of this Cabourg saloon, removed this component in order to restore it to its original appearance.
Engine bay and mechanical components
The engine bay is in a condition comparable to that of the bodywork: particularly sound and apparently complete.
The electrical circuits and wiring harnesses are present, with no apparent missing parts, and the cables appear to have retained their flexibility.
The hydraulic braking system will require servicing and repair before any road use. Once refurbished and tested, it should restore the braking performance characteristic of this Hotchkiss 680.
Conclusion
This 1937 Hotchkiss 680 Cabourg is a remarkable example of pre-war French motoring.
Its state of preservation, the quality of its original fittings, the apparent integrity of its wooden structure and the absence of any major alterations make it a particularly interesting example for enthusiasts of classic cars.
A car whose appeal lies above all in its authenticity and preservation, and which would benefit from being returned to working order in a manner that respects its original condition, rather than undergoing a complete restoration.
Mechanical condition and functionality must be checked before the car is put back on the road.
