Description
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) Alfa Romeo Tipo 6C 17/95 Supercharged 1.75-litre 1930–1931 Gouache on card 29 x 50 cm (signs of damp, mould and soiling) Notes: “Six cylinders, a twin-barrel Memini carburettor, a Roots supercharger and two overhead camshafts gave this 1,752 cm³ (65 x 88 mm) engine over 100 CV of actual power. Its performance was astonishing for 1930: from a standing start, it reached 95 km/h in ten seconds and could exceed 160 km/h. The build quality matched the design, and the engine was a true gem; the delicacy of the cooling fins on the intake manifold—a masterpiece of foundry work—is still admired by specialists today. Designed by engineer Jano and bodied by Zagato, the Alfa Romeo 17/95 is one of the great Italian classics. The question of whether or not it was superior to the Bugatti is far from settled, as both makes have their die-hard fans. Produced until 1934, the 17/95 served as the basis, from 1981 onwards, for the 140 CV six-cylinder 2800, many examples of which distinguished themselves in competition, notably at the 24 Hours of Le Mans: first in 1981 with Lord Howe and Tim Birkin, first in 1982 with Sommer and Chinetti, first in 1983 with Sommer and Nuvolari, first in 1984 with Chinetti and Etancelin.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus, 1965, our gouache reproduced on p. 149.
