Description
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) 1931 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Gouache on card 17.5 x 50 cm (signs of damp, mould and soiling) Notes: ‘Designers of the 1930s had greater creative freedom than we do today, notably being able to experiment with the headlights and separate wings. However, the angular severity of the Rolls-Royce’s front end sometimes clashed with the sweeping lines of the bodywork, as seen on this Super Marine. The Phantom II had more power than the Ghost and Phantom I, and the cantilever springs in the rear suspension of the latter two had been replaced by semi-elliptical springs and leaf springs running beneath the axle. The gearbox and clutch were integrated with the engine. The fastest Rolls-Royce of the era was the Continental, which reached 145 km/h.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus, 1965, our gouache reproduced on p. 165.
