Description
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) Alvis 12/50 1.5-litre 1924 Gouache on card 32 x 43 cm (signs of damp, mould and soiling) Notes: ‘With its sleek, polished aluminium bodywork and ducktail rear, the Alvis 12/50 remains one of Britain’s classic cars. Simple in design and extremely robust, with an excellent power-to-weight ratio, this car enjoyed numerous successes in competition for nearly a decade. The 1,496 cm³ engine (bore/stroke 68 x 103 mm) with a removable cylinder head featured overhead valves operated by rocker arms. Its power output of approximately 50 CV was transmitted via a cone clutch and a four-speed gearbox (later, the cone clutch was replaced by a disc clutch). When the 12/50 was launched in 1923, only the rear wheels had brakes, but it was not long before the front wheels were also fitted with them. This car reached a top speed of around 120 km/h.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus, 1965, our gouache reproduced on p. 115.
