Description
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) Vauxhall Prince Henry 4-litre 1913–1914 Gouache on card 32 x 50 cm (signs of damp, mould and soiling) Notes: ‘The first Vauxhall Prince Henry (built for the 1910 Prince Henry Trials) was a 3-litre model, but in 1913, by increasing the stroke and bore to 90 × 120 mm to 95 × 140 mm, the displacement increased to 3,969 cm³. For its time, this long-stroke, side-valve four-cylinder engine delivered considerable power; it produced 75 CV at just 2,500 rpm, which enabled it not only to reach a high top speed (120 km/h) but also to maintain that pace over long distances. Today, the surviving examples can maintain a cruising speed of over 100 km/h all day long. Its precise steering and excellent road holding place it amongst the most sought-after and expensive passenger cars of the Edwardian era. The engineer I.-H. Pomeroy fitted it with a Hele-Shaw multi-disc clutch, an excellent four-speed gearbox, a bevel-gear rear axle with an exposed drive shaft, and a long pushrod.’ Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus, 1965, our gouache reproduced on p. 83.
