Description
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) Alfa Romeo 22/90 RLSS 3-litre 1928 Gouache on card 34.5 x 38.5 cm (signs of damp, mould and soiling) Notes: ‘Derived from a large saloon car, this Alfa Romeo does not appear to have been influenced by the racing department, which had just created the P2. The 22/90 was carefully built, but lacked any original features. Its engine, a six-cylinder (75 x 110 mm) unit with overhead valves operated by rocker arms, was fed by two Solex carburettors. The four-speed gearbox had very short ratios and, when the engine was at maximum revs, this model reached a top speed of no more than 80 km/h in third gear, which seriously undermined its sporting claims. The RLSS (Super Sport), fitted with this attractive bow-shaped radiator bearing a double emblem, was said to reach a top speed of 135 km/h.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Editions, 1965, our gouache reproduced on p. 127.
