Description
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) 1937 BMW Type 327 2-litre Gouache on card 23 x 41 cm (signs of damp, mould and soiling) Notes: ‘The 327 had the same engine as the 328, considered to be the first modern sports car. It was a 1,971 cm³ six-cylinder engine (66 x 96 mm) characterised by a complex valve train: the inclined valves were operated, on the intake side, by pushrods and rocker arms, and, on the exhaust side, by an identical but duplicated system, with each pushrod-rocker arm assembly acting, much like a bell pull, on another pushrod-rocker arm assembly. This arrangement, whilst increasing the number of moving parts, allowed for the use of a hemispherical cylinder head. Despite its troubled design, this engine delivered an exceptional output of 80 CV; it was tuned to produce over 140 CV in the Cooper single-seaters of 1952–1953. The 327 reached speeds of nearly 160 km/h in silence and comfort.’ Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Editions, 1965, our gouache reproduced on p. 193.
