Description
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) Bugatti 57 SC 3.3-litre supercharged, 1938 Gouache on card 35 x 38.5 cm (signs of damp, mould and soiling) Notes: ‘Bugatti fitted the Type 57 with a supercharger, thereby creating the 57 C (160 CV and 170 km/h). At the same time, the 57 S was offered to customers; it differed from the 57 and 57 C in having a shorter, lower chassis and a wind-deflecting radiator. The 57 S was advertised as capable of 180 km/h with a 180 CV engine; the increase in power was achieved through a number of modifications and a higher compression ratio. The most advanced version of the 57 series was the 57 SC (sport with supercharger), which produced 210 CV and exceeded 200 km/h. The two sports models, the 57 S and 57 SC, differed from the 57 and 57 C in their dry-sump lubrication system. Bugatti always remained faithful to rigid axles, but the 1938 models were fitted with hydraulic brakes. Jean Bugatti designed original and daring bodywork for these sports chassis, such as this roadster with its front wheels fairing within pivoting wings.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus, 1965, our gouache reproduced on p. 202.
