Description
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) 1921 Darracq V8 Gouache on card 27.5 x 44 cm (traces of damp, mould and soiling) Notes: ‘A pale imitation of the famous Darracq V8 built for drag racing at the turn of the last century, the production VS model, manufactured after the First World War, made – like so many other luxury cars of that era, hastily put together – a brief one-year appearance. It was reputed to be unwieldy and to consume a great deal of fuel. The gearbox had four speeds and the rear axle was of the worm-gear type. The 4,584 emª (75 x 130 mm) side-valve engine developed 62 CV. Its top speed is thought to have been around 105 km/h. This magnificent bodywork stands in stark contrast to some of the monstrosities of the same era. The bonnet was made of polished aluminium, the mudguards were streamlined, and wooden slats protected the petrol tank from stone chips.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Editions, 1965; our gouache is reproduced on p. 85.
