Description
Peugeot 403: Year: 1962 Mileage: 9,468 km on the odometer Model: 403 Registration document: yes MOT: due A Peugeot that ushered the brand into a new era Unveiled in April 1955, the Peugeot 403 marked a key milestone in the history of the Sochaux-based manufacturer. It gradually replaced the 203 and, above all, became the first Peugeot to feature a body designed in collaboration with Pininfarina, ushering in a partnership that would go on to produce several of the brand’s iconic models. Its three-box design, far more modern and streamlined than that of the 203, accompanied France through the post-war automotive boom. Spacious, comfortable and renowned for its robustness, the 403 proved a resounding success: over 1.2 million units, across all body styles, were produced between 1955 and 1966. It thus became the first Peugeot to pass the symbolic milestone of one million units. The 403-7: a more affordable version From 1960 onwards, Peugeot expanded the range with the 403-7, featuring a smaller-displacement engine derived from the 203 and a deliberately simpler design. This version made it possible to offer a more affordable 403 following the gradual phasing out of the 203. This configuration was particularly well suited to the 403’s philosophy: a car without excessive sophistication, designed to be family-friendly, robust and suitable for everyday use. A silhouette that became famous The 403’s career was by no means confined to French roads. One of its rarest variants, the 403 convertible, would go on to achieve international fame several years later thanks to the television series *Columbo*, in which the lieutenant, played by Peter Falk, drove his now-famous Peugeot convertible. This appearance helped to make the 403’s silhouette known far beyond France. It is, however, important to note that the example offered here is a B7 saloon and not the convertible featured in the series. The car on offer This 1962 Peugeot 403 B7 has 9,468 km on the odometer. It features an interesting two-tone colour scheme. The car has been repainted and its mechanics are in good working order. Its interior and overall appearance are reminiscent of an era when the family saloon was still at the heart of the French car market. This example is a relatively basic 7 CV version, without any special options, which is precisely in keeping with the more affordable nature of this variant of the 403. Condition and appearance The car is presented in a consistent overall condition, with its two-tone paintwork. It has been repainted and runs well. It has yet to undergo its MOT test. As with any classic car whose recent use and service history are not fully documented, it is recommended that the main mechanical and safety components be checked before regular use. Key points This 1962 403 B7 offers a particularly accessible way to enter the world of classic French saloons. It is neither the most powerful nor the most prestigious of the 403 models, but that is precisely what makes it so appealing: it epitomises the French family car of the early 1960s – simple, robust and built to last. Its Pininfarina-designed styling, two-tone livery and place within one of Peugeot’s great historic line-ups lend it a certain charm today.
