- The engineer Jean-Albert Grégoire was renowned for his work in mechanical engineering, which he condensed to present the Grégoire R in 1947. It was a highly advanced car for its time, and for the period of reconstruction: vast aerodynamic bodywork, cast aluminium structure (like the Panhard Dyna), independent 4-wheel drive, air-cooled 4-cylinder flat engine, front-wheel drive, etc.
- In the summer of 1949, Hotchkiss signed a contract with Jean-Albert Grégoire for the Saint-Denis firm to produce the Grégoire R prototype, which embodied the future - with a capital A - of the firm's car manufacturing. Unfortunately, industrialisation of the project took longer than expected. Worse still, it was carried out without a serious study of the car's cost price, for which extensive use was made of subcontractors. Sold for 1,800,000 francs, it was barely profitable...
