Description
1953 - Hotchkiss Grégoire Cabriolet Chapron French registration title French registration title Vehicle sold without Technical Inspection Sold without Contrôle Technique Chassis n° 723 One of the 247 Hotchkiss Grégoire models built, one of only 7 convertibles! One of the 247 Hotchkiss Grégoire models built, one of only 7 convertibles! - The engineer Jean-Albert Grégoire was renowned for his work in mechanical engineering, which he condensed to present the Grégoire R in 1947. It was a highly advanced car for its time, and for the period of reconstruction: vast aerodynamic bodywork, cast aluminium structure (like the Panhard Dyna), independent 4-wheel drive, air-cooled 4-cylinder flat engine, front-wheel drive, etc. - In the summer of 1949, Hotchkiss signed a contract with Jean-Albert Grégoire for the Saint-Denis firm to produce the Grégoire R prototype, which embodied the future - with a capital A - of the firm's car manufacturing. Unfortunately, industrialisation of the project took longer than expected. Worse still, it was carried out without a serious study of the car's cost price, for which extensive use was made of subcontractors. Sold for 1,800,000 francs, it was barely profitable... This was the harbinger of a disaster that would eventually lead to the company's bankruptcy... - The venture, which seriously compromised Hotchkiss's financial equilibrium in 1952, came to an end in 1954 after the production of 247 cars (serial numbers 501 to 747), including 7 coaches and 7 cabriolets presented at the 1953 Motor Show and built by Henri Chapron. - The car we are presenting is one of these 7 Chapron cabriolets, body number 7058. It entered the collection of Mr F. in 1959 and has only been driven a short time, its odometer showing 11,854 km, a mileage that appears to be original given the condition of the car, which has a lovely patina but little wear, and is certainly in its original paintwork... - If you're a fan of rare birds, signed convertibles, automotive technology and competition beasts, this is the car for you. And with a claimed 150 km/h, gentlemen drivers will not be outdone. - Engineer Jean-Albert Grégoire is known for his work in mechanics, which he summarised in 1947 to present the Grégoire R.
