This carburettor-powered Citroën SM rolled off the production line in 1972 with a superb colour scheme combining ‘Bleu d’Orient’ (AC 616) with a stunning brown leather interior. Its history is impeccable and rather unusual, as it was delivered new on 29 May 1972 to the French Embassy in Saudi Arabia, as recorded in its original service book. When it had clocked up around 20,000 km, it was purchased by the then CEO of Mitsubishi, then, in 1981, it passed into the hands of its previous owner, a great Citroën enthusiast, whilst it had clocked up just over 60,000 km. In 2015, he had this fine example undergo extensive mechanical restoration work, with components checked or replaced where necessary. The hydraulic system (brakes, steering and suspension) was also overhauled, and the ball joints and pivots replaced. At the same time, the clutch was replaced and all electrical systems were checked. In 2016, the paintwork was redone, the Michelin tyres were replaced and a stainless steel exhaust system was fitted. In total, nearly €25,000 was spent before the current owner acquired the car in October 2016, when it had clocked up 94,293 km. The current owner has since driven a further 5,000 km without incident. This fourth-hand car, with a crystal-clear and well-documented history, boasts a rare and enviable elegance.

1972 Citroën SM
This carburettor-engined Citroën SM left the factory in 1972 with a superb colour scheme combining ‘Bleu d’Orient’ (AC 616) paintwork and a magnificent brown leather interior. It has a clear and unusual history, having been delivered new on 29 May 1972 to the French Embassy in Saudi Arabia, as recorded in its original service book. After covering around 20,000 km, it was purchased by the then CEO of Mitsubishi, before being acquired in 1981 by its previous owner, a keen Citroën enthusiast, when it had covered a total of just over 60,000 km. In 2015, he had extensive mechanical restoration work carried out on this fine example, with all components checked and replaced where necessary. The hydraulic systems (for the brakes, steering and suspension) were also overhauled, and the kingpins and ball joints were replaced. At the same time, the clutch was replaced and all the electrical equipment was checked. In 2016, the car was repainted, the Michelin tyres were replaced and a stainless-steel exhaust was fitted. In total, nearly €25,000 was spent before the car’s current owner purchased it in October 2016, when it had covered 94,293 km. Since then, he has added 5,000 km to this total, without any problems. This car, which has had only four owners and boasts a clear, documented history, displays a rare and enviable elegance.
