Elegant and superbly built, the Mercedes-Benz E 320 Cabriolet belongs to the W124 generation – more specifically the A124 for the cabriolet – and is one of the most exclusive variants in this range. Unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1991 as the 300 CE-24 Cabriolet, the model marked Mercedes-Benz’s return to the four-seater convertible after an absence of nearly twenty years. In 1993, following the restyling of the range and the adoption of the brand’s new nomenclature, it was renamed the E 320 Cabriolet.
Under the bonnet sat the 3.2-litre M104 inline six-cylinder engine with 24 valves and twin overhead camshafts. Delivering 220 ch at 5,500 rpm and 310 Nm of torque, it represented an evolution of the 3-litre engine from the previous 300 CE-24. Offering more power at low and medium revs, this engine provides greater flexibility and is perfectly suited to the model’s grand touring credentials. With a top speed of 234 km/h, the E 320 delivered first-class performance for a four-seater convertible of the early 1990s. Particular attention was paid to the bodywork design. With the roof removed, the structure was significantly reinforced to maintain a level of rigidity on a par with other W124 models. Mercedes-Benz also paid particular attention to the multi-layered soft top and its soundproofing: once closed, the E 320 retains the comfort and quietness expected of a grand tourer.
Interior space is, in fact, one of its main strengths. Unlike many convertibles, which offer only two makeshift rear seats, the E 320 is a genuine four-seater, making it suitable for long journeys with several passengers, whether the soft top is open or closed. Safety has not been sacrificed for the sake of elegance: the absence of a fixed roll bar preserves the purity of the silhouette, whilst retractable rear roll bars deploy automatically in the event of a risk of rollover. Designed under the direction of Bruno Sacco, its styling is characterised by elegant simplicity. With its balanced proportions, clean lines and lack of embellishment, it perfectly exemplifies the Mercedes-Benz design of the 1990s and has stood the test of time particularly well.
The model shown was sold new on 9 October 1994 by the Mercedes dealership in Rouen. It is therefore a 1995 model. It was purchased four years later by the second owner, a lawyer from Calvados, on 3 September 1999 with 60,057 km on the clock as a recent second-hand car from the Mercedes dealership in Caen. It was also supplied with a 12-month warranty by that garage (a copy of the purchase invoice is included in the file). The car is regularly serviced by the Mercedes garage in Lisieux. It now has 84,400 km on the clock since leaving the factory and has just undergone a full service at Mercedes following its purchase by a company owned by an Artcurial employee. It comes with its file of invoices (copies), the owner’s manuals and the latest invoice from Mercedes Versailles. The car is ready to hit the road with four people comfortably seated to enjoy the sunshine of this mild winter.
The car belongs to an employee of the auction house.
