This rare and iconic De Luxe Microbus “Samba” with its 23 windows left the factory on 16 August 1957, bound for the USA, as evidenced by the certificate issued by Volkswagen confirming that it is an authentic “241” version. Painted in ‘sealing wax’ red, it was unearthed in California in the late 1990s and subsequently imported to Europe. Guido Hommel acquired it from HK Engineering. He had, in fact, been searching for a long time for a fine, authentic example of the first generation, still in its original configuration. This particular car has indeed retained its original features, such as the 1,192 cm³ 30cv engine, the gearbox specific to this generation, its 6-volt electrical system, and its ‘arrow’-type indicators, which would be phased out in later versions. It is also worth noting that this car was fitted with optional front indicators. The comprehensive restoration it has undergone, as evidenced by the photographs, is of a high standard. The underbody is sound, the bodywork is well-maintained and the paintwork is of a high standard. A file of invoices also completes the documentation, alongside brochures and technical documentation.
A true holy grail amongst the ‘Combis’, the ‘Samba’ De Luxe version is the most sought-after thanks to its particularly light-filled interior – with 23 windows and a large sunroof – which is a genuine invitation to escape, accommodating up to nine passengers. A vehicle which, in such condition, is bound to attract the attention of enthusiasts of this model.
