First launched in 1954, the Borgward Isabella was available as a coupé and a convertible from 1957 onwards. The coupé featured modern, American-influenced styling, and its 1500 engine, producing 75cv, delivered good performance, whilst its luxurious fittings were aimed at a wealthy clientele who could not necessarily afford a Mercedes. Particularly prized by our collector, who owns two examples, this 1958 coupé is remarkable for its excellent condition. Originally intended for the American market, as evidenced by its odometer reading in miles, it was registered on 5 April 1960 in Wiesbaden, Germany, before passing into the hands of a journalist in 1964. Although the bodywork has been repainted in the past, it is in very sound condition and displays a lovely patina. The two-tone imitation leather upholstery is in good, used condition, whilst the carpets have been refitted. A rev counter has been fitted beneath the dashboard, and the accessories include a period car radio. The glove compartment still contains the original owner’s manuals, and a 2024 valuation report is included in the file. Maintained by our collector’s personal mechanic, this Isabella is in good working order and its exotic character adds to the appeal of its consistent presentation, which combines patina with meticulous upkeep.

1958 Borgward Isabella Coupé
The Borgward Isabella went on sale in 1954, with coupé and cabriolet models added from 1957. The coupé featured modern, American-influenced styling, and its 1500cc 75bhp engine delivered good performance; its specification was deliberately luxurious, designed to appeal to affluent customers who could not necessarily afford a Mercedes. Our client, who has two of them in his collection, is particularly fond of this 1958 coupé, which is remarkable for the condition in which it has been preserved. Originally intended for the American market, as can be seen from its speedometer reading in miles, it was registered on 5 April 1960 in Wiesbaden, Germany, before passing to a journalist in 1964. Although repainted at some point, the bodywork is in very sound condition and has an attractive patina. The two-tone leatherette upholstery is in good, used condition, whilst the carpets have been refitted. A rev counter has been added beneath the dashboard, and the fitted accessories include a period radio. The glove compartment still contains the car’s original documentation, and there is a valuation report from 2024 in its history file. Maintained by our client’s personal mechanic, this Isabella is in good running order and its exotic character adds to the appeal of its consistent overall condition, which combines regular maintenance with a lovely patina.
