Unveiled in the late 1950s, the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Speciale was born out of the Milanese firm’s desire to offer a particularly high-performance and aerodynamic version of its brilliant Giulietta. Its production was entrusted to Bertone and its design to Franco Scaglione, whose spectacular Alfa Romeo B.A.T. prototypes had already demonstrated his mastery of aerodynamic forms.
With its very low profile, long, sloping bonnet, curved wings and tapered rear, the Giulietta SS boasted a silhouette that was as spectacular as it was efficient. Housed beneath this bodywork was the famous Alfa Romeo ‘bialbero’ 1,290 cm³ twin-cam four-cylinder engine, fed by two twin-barrel carburettors and developing around 100 ch. Coupled with a five-speed gearbox and benefiting from the car’s excellent aerodynamics, it enables it to reach speeds of nearly 190 km/h: a remarkable achievement for a 1300 of that era.
More refined and better suited to the open road than the radical Giulietta SZ, which was designed for competition, the Sprint Speciale combines performance, lightness and elegance in the purest Italian tradition.
Produced until 1962 before being replaced by the Giulia Sprint Speciale fitted with the 1,600 cm³ engine, the Giulietta SS is today regarded as one of the most distinctive Alfa Romeos of its era. Its design by Scaglione, its twin-cam engine and its limited production run make it a car that is as significant in the brand’s history as it is highly sought-after by collectors.
This Alfa Romeo was sold new in France in 1962 to its first owner. He quickly decided it was too powerful for his liking and ‘got rid of’ it four years later! In 1966, it was therefore a real bargain for its second and final owner, Henri Bourion, a passionate Alfa Romeo enthusiast who kept it until his death last year. Henri Bourion’s love for Alfa Romeo was part of a circle of enthusiasts. He was, in fact, a close friend of Guy Steinbach, a well-known local amateur figure amongst the ‘Alfisti’ and gentleman drivers of the time. Guy Steinbach had raced for the marque in France as co-driver in an Alfa Romeo SVZ at the Tour de France Automobile in September 1960 (the Pasquier/Steinbach duo finished 15th overall), and was a collector of Alfas. It was steeped in this atmosphere of amateur racing that Henri Bourion acquired this car, not to race it, but for the prestige and exclusive pleasure that this Giulietta bestowed upon the great charmer that he was. The car has been subject to regular and thorough maintenance, including the most recent servicing carried out by the excellent mechanic Franck Opderbeck, ensuring that this superb Alfa SS is in excellent condition. Its interior was refitted in beige leather and the paintwork was renewed in 2018. A considerable amount of work was carried out at that time. As for the engine, it is the original one. Having remained in the hands of a true enthusiast for 60 years, and always lovingly looked after, this is a highly desirable car, particularly for collectors across France who will appreciate the distinctive yellow Carello headlights characteristic of its French origins.
