Only 448 Ferrari 550 Barchettas were built by the manufacturer to celebrate Pininfarina’s 70th anniversary, and the example we are offering, with less than 13,700 km recorded from new, has the number 311 engraved on the centre console. For an anniversary of this magnitude, Ferrari pulled out all the stops. Boasting a masterful design—by Pininfarina, of course—and in the tradition of Ferrari’s most prestigious convertibles, the car was powered by a splendid 5.5-litre V12 engine producing 485 ch, which enabled this machine to join the very exclusive ‘over 300 km/h’ club.
As can be seen from its Ferrari international assistance booklet, this 550 Barchetta was sold new in November 2001 by the Charles Pozzi dealership in Levallois. Its first owner was none other than André Cholley, a passionate motorsport enthusiast and owner of a Peugeot 905, who later took over the AGS Formula 1 team based at the Circuit du Luc. As shown on the certificate of sale, he sold the car in 2007 to Mr Lesur, a collector in the Pas-de-Calais. Lesur in turn sold it to another enthusiast in the region, Mr Guchez, who had it serviced by the renowned Madou Compétition workshop in Seclin. During this period, a stainless steel exhaust system – which was less restrictive than the original – was fitted to produce a more exhilarating sound. It was from Madou Compétition that the current owner, a Ferrari enthusiast and organiser of events in northern France dedicated to the marque, purchased the car in 2013, with
barely 11,600 km on the clock since new.
As the owner of several Ferraris, he took great care of the Barchetta whilst using it relatively little and only in good weather; he continued to have it serviced by Madou Compétition, who replaced the two timing belts in 2024.
This sparing use explains the car’s current condition: with just 13,700 km on the clock since new, it boasts immaculate Rosso Corsa paintwork and a well-preserved interior featuring attractive black seats with red stitching, along with a few signs of wear on the Alcantara covering the transmission tunnel – a common occurrence on this model. It should be noted that the paintwork has a lovely shine and has recently been treated with a ceramic coating. The original windscreen is cracked at the top on both sides – a classic fault on the 550 Barchetta – and will need to be replaced, as will all four tyres, which, although not worn, date from 2012. In the boot, you will find the two helmets in their special red bags, which were supplied with the car and are highly prized by collectors.
A history file is also provided, containing several documents including invoices, the completed warranty booklet (the service booklet was misplaced during a house move), various manuals in French in their Ferrari folder, a valuation report, a period brochure and various roadworthiness test certificates.
This 550 Barchetta represents a splendid opportunity to acquire an extremely rare open-top Ferrari with a front-mounted V12 engine, beautifully preserved and sold with its original helmets; capable of reaching 300 km/h, it is a tribute to the famous designer and coachbuilder for whom it was produced. This car will grant you entry to the finest historic motoring events, as well as offering extraordinary driving sensations and immense pleasure behind the wheel.
