The Ferrari 456 is part of one of Maranello’s oldest and most prestigious traditions: that of large, front-engined V12 GTs capable of seating four people. From the 250 GTE and 330 GT to the 365 GT 2+2, then the 365 GT4 2+2, 400 and 412, Ferrari has always succeeded in combining the performance of its twelve-cylinder engines with the comfort and elegance of cars designed to cover long distances at very high speeds.
When it was unveiled in 1992, the 456 GT ushered this tradition into a new era. Its design, by Pininfarina, broke with the angular lines of the 412 in favour of a particularly fluid and balanced silhouette. Its long bonnet, sloping roofline, four circular rear lights and retractable headlights combine to create a remarkably understated profile, now regarded as one of the hallmarks of Ferrari’s grand touring cars of the 1990s. In 1998, Ferrari radically updated the model and unveiled the 456 M, standing for ‘Modificata’. This version featured numerous improvements to aerodynamics, cooling, the running gear, ergonomics and the interior finish. The front end was also redesigned, and various details were refined to perfect a car that had already reached maturity. Produced until 2004, the 456 M thus represents the final and most accomplished evolution of the 456 range.
The example presented here takes this concept even further, as it is a 2004 456 M GT – from the model’s final year of production – and is fitted with the highly sought-after six-speed manual gearbox. It thus combines the 456’s latest technical developments with a transmission that allows the character of its V12 to be harnessed most directly.
Under its long bonnet lies a naturally aspirated 5,474 cm³ V12 engine developing 442 ch at 6,250 rpm and nearly 550 Nm of torque. Coupled with the six-speed manual gearbox, this powertrain enables the large 2+2 from Maranello to reach speeds of nearly 300 km/h – a particularly remarkable achievement for a car offering four seats and the handling qualities of a true Gran Turismo. The superb example presented here was sold new on 27 February 2004 by Cesare Meccanica Service, a Ferrari dealership in Salerno, to an Italian company. In December 2005, it was purchased from the company by Mrs Cortelli, who naturally continued to have it serviced at the same Ferrari centre in Salerno. In 2015, the garage repurchased it to sell it to the third owner. The car subsequently found its way to France, where its servicing continued. Its regularly stamped service logbook allows one to track the work carried out over the years and helps to document the steady increase in its mileage. In 2023, this Ferrari also underwent a particularly comprehensive valuation, the report of which is available on request and complements its historical file. With 25,700 km on the clock, this 456 M GT is in an impressive condition; its red leather upholstery shows no flaws. This is not only a rare example in this condition, with this mileage, but also in the most elegant ‘Grigio Titanio’ colour for this ultimate evolution of the 456 range.
