Unveiled in 1994 as the successor to the 348, the Ferrari F355 marks a major milestone in the history of Maranello’s V8 coupés. Whilst retaining the general mid-rear-engined layout of its predecessor, it benefited from significant development covering its engine, chassis, aerodynamics and ease of use. With this model, Ferrari succeeded in combining top-class performance with a balance and driving pleasure that heralded a new generation of models.
At the heart of the F355 lies its extraordinary naturally aspirated 3,496 cm³ V8 engine, whose name ‘355’ refers directly to its 3.5-litre displacement and five valves per cylinder. Capable of delivering 380 ch at 8,250 rpm – equivalent to nearly 109 ch per litre without any forced induction – this engine stands as a remarkable demonstration of Ferrari’s expertise in high-revving naturally aspirated engines.
Paired here with the highly sought-after six-speed manual gearbox, operated via the traditional Ferrari metal gear selector, the V8 enables the F355 to reach a top speed of around 295 km/h and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in under five seconds. But beyond the figures, it is above all its driving character that helped make the F355 one of the iconic Ferraris of its era: immediate throttle response, spectacular revving and the characteristic sound of the five-valve Ferrari V8.
The history of this 355 GTS is particularly well documented. It was sold new in Rome by SA.MO.CAR, one of the Italian capital’s historic Ferrari dealerships, and delivered to its first owner on 16 June 1995. Since then, the car has had only five owners, including the current one, and its maintenance history is documented in its stamped service book and accompanying paperwork. A particularly interesting part of its history took place in France. Between 2000 and 2006, the car was regularly entrusted to Auvergne Moteurs, ensuring meticulous maintenance by the excellent Philippe Gardette, a recognised specialist in Maranello cars. Outside this period, its servicing was carried out within the Ferrari network, ensuring the continuity of its service history. The current owner, a former Porsche enthusiast who eventually fell under the spell of Maranello’s models, acquired it from a Parisian dealer; it has covered just 65,050 km since leaving the factory and is in a most attractive condition. It still retains its regularly stamped service booklet, along with its various manuals and on-board documents, all housed in their elegant original Ferrari leather folder. These elements take on particular significance for a car of this generation and allow its history to be traced back to its delivery as a new car in Rome.
As the last representative of an era when the Ferrari V8 berlinetta still combined pop-up headlights, a high-revving naturally aspirated engine and a manual gearbox with a gear-selector gate, the F355 now occupies a special place in the lineage of Maranello’s sports cars. In its GTS variant, it adds the unique pleasure of being able to unleash the roar of its V8 simply by removing the roof panel.
