Description
1967 Alfa Romeo 2600 Sprint coupé, formerly owned by “Fifi” Étancelin No reserve Manufacturer: 1967 Alfa Romeo 2600 Sprint coupé, formerly owned by “Fifi” Étancelin Model: No reserve Registration document: French registration document Chassis No.: Chassis No. 826267 - Purchased new by the famous racing driver Philippe Étancelin, winner of the 1934 24 Hours of Le Mans in an Alfa 8C - Has remained in the Étancelin family ever since - Moving original condition, 58,000 km on the clock - No reserve This Alfa Romeo is exceptional for its history. It is the last new car purchased by Philippe Étancelin, known as ‘Fifi’, an iconic and popular figure in motor racing, famous for his backwards cap, who competed, from 1926 to 1953, in numerous races, including several international Grands Prix, at the wheel of his Bugattis, Alfa Romeos, Maseratis and Talbot Lagos. He is the only driver to have started both the first Monaco Grand Prix, in 1929, and the first Formula 1 Grand Prix, in 1950. As period photographs show, he purchased this 2600 Sprint in March 1967 from the brand’s showroom on the Champs-Élysées, to commemorate his victory at the 1934 24 Hours of Le Mans in his Alfa Romeo 8C 2.3-litre, which he shared with Luigi Chinetti, the future Ferrari importer in the United States. This Alfa Romeo has always remained in the family and, in October 1981, was sold to André Étancelin, the driver’s grandson, 10 days before the latter’s death. Still bearing its original registration number ‘8351 FY 76’, it is in its original condition with its mink-grey bodywork. An expert report in the file states that the bodywork shows signs of corrosion in certain areas, notably at the bottom of the doors and along the sills, and will therefore require restoration. The engine has been regularly serviced (with invoices totalling €30,000) and the odometer reads 58,000 km, the original mileage. The beige leather interior shows only slight signs of ageing. The car is sold with a spare key and various documents, including a copy of the certificate of transfer signed by Philippe Étancelin and a photograph of the driver taken on the same street 34 years apart: in 1933 with the Alfa 8C and in 1967 with the Sprint coupé. In addition to the intrinsic qualities of this Alfa Romeo coupé, with its twin-cam 6-cylinder engine and Bertone bodywork, this car boasts an extraordinary history, linked to one of the most popular French racing drivers of his era.
