1967 – Saab Sonett II Chassis no. 000033 French collector’s registration document ‘Very charming and original’ Unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1966, the Saab Sonett II marked the Swedish manufacturer’s first foray into mass-produced sports coupés. Developed primarily for export to North America, this unconventional model combines a rigid steel chassis with an ultra-light fibreglass body.   Produced from 1966 to 1969 in a run of just 258 units, the Sonett II is powered by the engine from the Saab 96 saloon, foremost among which is the legendary three-cylinder two-stroke engine, a legacy of the brand’s victories at the Monte Carlo Rally.   First registered in June 1967, this Saab Sonett II is one of the extremely rare 258 examples fitted with the two-stroke engine. Boasting its original red livery, it stands at the very beginning of the line-up as the third production car to be built, the first thirty units having been reserved by the factory as rally prototypes.   Sold new in Switzerland, it remained there in good condition until 1984 before moving to the Netherlands. It was in 2019 that its current owner, a discerning French collector, acquired it. Its history is traceable and differs from the majority of the production run, which was exported to the American market. Its mechanical condition is impeccable. Our test drive proved particularly enjoyable and convincing, highlighting the liveliness of the three-cylinder engine. This two-seater coupé offers a unique driving experience, accompanied by the characteristic wisp of smoke from the exhaust – the very essence of this vintage technology!
